Third period will be taking their 50 states quiz on Monday due to our Fire Drill today. Be ready to take it on Monday.
I will be teaching Social Studies for the remainder of the school year. We've wrapped up all of the 5th grade science standards and are going to wrap the year up finishing only social studies. I will be adding science grades from the labs that we did to wrap things up before OAA testing happened. They will also be getting a grade on their circuit boards too that they are completing, so there will be more grades added to science before the end of the quarter. Be on the look out as things are posted.

50 Nifty Quiz tomorrow and more!
Remember, tomorrow we are back to our weekly 50 Nifty states quizzes every Friday.
Career Day this year will be on May 9 for our kids. We can't to see what is in store from our wonderful speakers this year! I'm sure it will be fantastic though!
Our 5th Grade field trip is May 14 to NKU. Let's keep bringing in those permission slips!
All three OAA's are finished and we knocked them out of the park! Now things can get back to our normal schedule!

Weekly States Quiz
For 5th grade, kids are required to know where the fifty states are on a U.S. map. Therefore, in Social Studies for fourth quarter I will be giving the students a weekly states quiz every Friday, beginning this Friday, March 15. We took a pretest today in class. Your child will get their pretests back tomorrow to see which states they labeled correctly. The students will know that they got a state correct if I highlighted the name of the state. If it is not highlighted, then it is incorrect. Each Friday they will need to know 5 new states in addition to the old ones that they already knew. For example, if they got 5 states correct on their pretest today, then for Friday they will need to know 10 (the 5 correct ones and an additional 5 new ones). Once they've achieved their goal of labeling all 50 states, they will become a member of the Fifty Nifty Club and they will then move on to learning the capitals of each state.

Grades to come...
Meetings and meetings and meetings, oh my! With meetings morning, noon and night, I have been delayed a few days longer than I would have liked to have been in entering a few things. I will be adding four grades for social studies here in the next few days. The kids worked on a Native American chart in class over a few weeks time span so I did not collect it as we went. I decided to have them turn it in at the end when we were finished with it. I didn't want to keep collecting it and then redistributing it every day, it just didn't fit. So keep your eyes peeled for those grades, each tribe will be worth 18 points, with a total of 4 tribes.
I will also be adding some science grades from wrap up activities that we did in class within the last week about space and their earth and space science unit test. Be looking for these as well.

1st and 2nd Period Science TEST MONDAY!!!
I was out unexpectedly on Thursday, February 28th when we played our Jeopardy review game for our science test. There were computer malfunctions with the sub so I played Jeopardy with the kids Friday, March 1 and moved 1st and 2nd periods' test to Monday, March 4. Third period took the test today because the Jeopardy review game worked during their class.

Earth and Space Unit Test Friday
We will be wrapping up our Earth and Space unit this week. The kids will have their unit test this Friday, March 1 over the material. I will be giving them their study guides on Tuesday in class. We will be reading our lesson in our science book and playing Jeopardy on the Smartboard as class reviews for our test.
We are finishing our four Native American tribes Monday with our review game on the Smartboard. We will be starting colonization of the new world and will be listening to a catchy tune to help us learn about the topic. Also a topic of discussion this week: Christopher Columbus....hero or not? There are different opinions about his discovery and we will read about both sides and form our own opinions.

January 22-25,2013
We're back after having a nice three day weekend, which was hopefully relaxing.
Science
In science we are studying earth and space. This week we'll be wrapping up our planet studies in our "Can You Planet" packets that we've been working on in class. We will be moving onto what causes our seasons next. Space is such an extraordinary thing to learn about, I'm always in awe of the vast amount of knowledge that is out there that is changing all of the time. Since we've returned from Christmas break we've picked up where we left off in our daily science questions. The students have been taught since the beginning of the year how to keep their science journals and hopefully they've been doing a great job. This Friday I will be giving the students two quizzes: the order of the planets and an opening question quiz. I taught the students a way to remember the order of the planets beginning with the closest one to the sun:
My - Mercury
Very - Venus
Educated - Earth
Mother - Mars
Just - Jupiter
Served - Saturn
Us - Uranus
Nachos - Neptune
Their opening question quiz will be open notes. They may have to write down the answer for the day's question, write what date I gave the question, or write down the question from the day. As long as they've kept their journal correctly, as they've been instructed, and they've caught up on their questions if they were absent, they should ace the quiz!
Social Studies
Social Studies has us learning about citizenship rights and responsibilities. We've been reading and discussing a lot about the naturalization process and how lucky most of us are to have been born in the U.S. It's hard work becoming a U.S. citizen! Next we will dig into our past and begin learning about history!Wednesday, January 9, 2013
Social Studies Quiz Friday, January 11
The kids will be having a Social Studies quiz on Friday over the three branches of government. We have made a foldable in our social studies journal to help us study. (Legislative, Executive, Judicial)
