January 22-25,2013

We're back after having a nice three day weekend, which was hopefully relaxing.

Science

In science we are studying earth and space. This week we'll be wrapping up our planet studies in our "Can You Planet" packets that we've been working on in class. We will be moving onto what causes our seasons next. Space is such an extraordinary thing to learn about, I'm always in awe of the vast amount of knowledge that is out there that is changing all of the time. Since we've returned from Christmas break we've picked up where we left off in our daily science questions. The students have been taught since the beginning of the year how to keep their science journals and hopefully they've been doing a great job.
This Friday I will be giving the students two quizzes: the order of the planets and an opening question quiz. I taught the students a way to remember the order of the planets beginning with the closest one to the sun:
My - Mercury
Very - Venus
Educated - Earth
Mother - Mars
Just - Jupiter
Served - Saturn
Us - Uranus
Nachos - Neptune
Their opening question quiz will be open notes. They may have to write down the answer for the day's question, write what date I gave the question, or write down the question from the day. As long as they've kept their journal correctly, as they've been instructed, and they've caught up on their questions if they were absent, they should ace the quiz!

Social Studies

Social Studies has us learning about citizenship rights and responsibilities. We've been reading and discussing a lot about the naturalization process and how lucky most of us are to have been born in the U.S. It's hard work becoming a U.S. citizen! Next we will dig into our past and begin learning about history!

Social Studies Quiz Friday, January 11

The kids will be having a Social Studies quiz on Friday over the three branches of government. We have made a foldable in our social studies journal to help us study. (Legislative, Executive, Judicial)
